Oil Painting for Beginner and Intermediate Artists

Class Description:

Students will learn the basics of oil painting and composition taught in the traditional Atelier style. Students will paint landscape and still life pictures painted from students own photos as well as still life subjects painted from life, when possible. Students will learn the value of perspective, value and temperature when creating a three-dimensional picture on a two-dimensional support.

Instructor Background: Mr. Mendelsohn, holder of both BA and MA degree as well as a MD, is predominantly a landscape artist utilizing both oil and egg tempera paints. Possessor of over four decades of experience, Frederick has studied extensively with the Art students League in NYC,The Art League of Long Island, New School University, and Marymount College and is a proud member of the Long Island Museum Artist Guild as well as the Setauket Artist Group and the North Shore Art Guild.

Recommended Supply List: Canvas or Linen support( stretched or panel mounted): Any size is fine but starting out, smaller sizes such as 11-14, 12-16, 12-12, 12-24 ect.

Brushes: I prefer flats and rounds. Synthetics are fine and cost effective, ie: Silver brush (Bristlon)
or Rosemary and Co.(Ivory). Plus filbert and flat hogshair bristle brushes.

Paints: Any brand is fine, but suggest Windsor Newton and Gamblin.

  • Ultramarine Blue, Colbalt Blue, Cerulean Blue

  • Raw Umber, Burnt Umber , Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna , Yellow Ochre Light
